Repowering London: How to tell fossil fuels to eff off
Fed-up Londoners are ditching dirty fossil fuels and cashing in on clean, green energy—all while slashing bills and tackling climate change
Our Fair Future has teamed up with Antidote to bring you stories of people building a future that works, and they’re doing it in communities just like yours, showing what’s possible when we take charge together.
In an inspiring grassroots movement dubbed Repowering London, ordinary people are taking control of their own power supply by installing community-owned renewable energy projects. Far from wealthy investors, these are everyday families determined to save money, clean up their neighbourhoods and create a brighter future.
The idea is simple but powerful: harness the sun, generate electricity, sell it, and reinvest the profits. From lowering household bills to funding new solar panels across the capital, the scheme is already pumping hundreds of thousands of pounds back into local communities.
Campaigners say the project is proof that the fight against climate change doesn’t have to be left to politicians or big corporations. In Germany, for instance, a staggering 20 per cent of the nation’s electricity is owned by citizens rather than fossil fuel giants—and Londoners are eager to follow suit.
Organisers are now calling on people across Britain to get involved, insisting that community-owned power is the key to breaking free from reliance on oil and gas. With household budgets under pressure and energy bills still sky-high, turning sunshine into savings may be the most powerful protest of all.
