Is it time to break up with your supermarket?
A Northern Irish town delivered a masterclass in building community through food
Our Fair Future has teamed up with Antidote to bring you stories of people building a future that works, and they’re doing it in communities just like yours, showing what’s possible when we take charge together.
In a defiant stand against soaring supermarket prices and chemical-laden produce, a band of determined residents in Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland, have launched their very own greengrocer—and it's already turning heads and turning over thousands.
Sick of sky-high food bills and what unsustainable farming practices, this tight-knit community decided enough was enough. Teaming up with a local agroecology farmer, they’ve cut out the middleman—and the pesticides—to bring fresh, affordable fruit and veg straight to the people.
The result? A staggering £10,000 earned in just the first week, smashing expectations and sending a strong message to the big chains: the people have had it.
But this isn’t just about money. Supporters say it’s a win for wallets, the planet and public health. Their mission? To boost soil quality, reduce waste and eliminate plastic-wrapped produce that’s travelled thousands of miles.
This grassroots food revolution is now being hailed as a model for communities across the UK. With cost-of-living pressures biting hard, could your town be next?
