Climate elites think it’s a fair COP to chop down rainforest
Quick take: Is this what COP30 president André Corrêa do Lago meant when he said, “As the COP comes to the Amazon, forests will naturally be a central topic”?
The BBC is running the headline: Amazon Forest Felled to Build Road for Climate Summit. The climate summit in question is COP30, the latest gathering of the international climate community that has so far failed to reach any of its goals despite 30 years of talking about them.
The article notes that:
A new four-lane highway cutting through tens of thousands of acres of protected Amazon rainforest is being built for the COP30 climate summit in the Brazilian city of Belém.
It aims to ease traffic to the city, which will host more than 50,000 people - including world leaders - at the conference in November.
The state government touts the highway's "sustainable" credentials, but some locals and conservationists are outraged at the environmental impact.
The Amazon plays a vital role in absorbing carbon for the world and providing biodiversity, and many say this deforestation contradicts the very purpose of a climate summit.
Needless to say, this is not a good look for people who supposedly care about the rainforest: indeed, COP30 president André Corrêa do Lago noted in his first major statement about the event a few days ago that “As the COP comes to the Amazon, forests will naturally be a central topic”, which is somewhat ironic in light of this press coverage.
Not only does this type of thing show just how out of touch these elites are with public perception (let alone moral correctness), it also offers ammunition to climate deniers. No sooner had this headline gone live, Paul Joseph Watson wrote his own article about it going out to his 1.4 million followers on X, stating (with some good reason):
Tens of thousands of acres of Amazon rainforest is being cleared in order to construct a four-lane highway so that global elites can drive to the COP30 Climate Summit after disembarking from their private jets.
…
Of course, the very same world ‘leaders’ who lecture everyday people about their carbon footprints and suggest eating lab grown meat instead of the real thing will fly in on private jets and then hop in their SUVs to travel down the new highway, all in the name of saving the planet.
Needless to say, Watson uses this as evidence that the whole conversation around climate is corrupt rather than the more accurate truth that mainstream climate conversations have not only failed to achieve their goals but are tone deaf to common sense and the perceptions and needs of ordinary people.
It’s time for us to reclaim Our Fair Future from the hands of the elites.
