Britain loves fairness: Mega poll reveals nation’s hidden optimism
At a time when doom and gloom headlines dominate the airwaves, a giant new poll has uncovered a glimmer of hope
A new survey from HOPE not hate and Ecotricity, one of the biggest of its kind with more than 45,000 people taking part, shows that while families up and down the country are struggling with rising prices and battered by years of political turmoil, the spirit of optimism is alive and kicking.
According to the study, over half of Britons (52%) say they feel positive about the future. And despite the endless talk of division and decline, the poll suggests that what really matters to people are simple, down-to-earth values: fairness, security, and stronger communities.
Tired of politics—but not of hope
It’s no secret that trust in politicians is at rock bottom—just 5% of people say they trust MPs to tell the truth. But this doesn’t mean the public has given up on politics altogether. Far from it. Three-quarters of respondents said they want more power handed to local communities, where they believe real change can happen. Citizens’ assemblies, online debates, and community-led initiatives are all being called for as a way to breathe life back into our democracy.
Communities want to come together
One of the most striking findings is the strength of Britain’s community spirit. While six in ten worry about national divisions, a whopping four in five people say they enjoy mixing with neighbours from different backgrounds. And just shy of half of the country proudly supports multicultural Britain—a clear message to those who try to sow division.
When asked what makes a great community, the answers were refreshingly practical: safe streets, good healthcare, and neighbours who look out for one another. It’s a reminder that, beneath the headlines, most people simply want to get on with their lives—together.
Cost of living and NHS top priorities
The study reveals the issues that matter most day-to-day: the NHS and the cost of living. People want a fairer economy, with 79% calling for more investment in the health service, stronger workers’ rights, and new taxes on the wealthiest.
Climate—a call to action
Britons are also sending a clear message on the environment: they want action. Two-thirds believe climate change is real and dangerous, and most want big business to foot the bill for tackling it. With the right approach, people believe Net Zero could mean new jobs and opportunities, not just sacrifices.
A nation ready to believe again
So, while it may feel like Britain is battered by constant bad news, this mammoth poll shows something brighter: we are still a nation that wants fairness, dignity, and belonging. Hope, it turns out, is not in short supply. What’s needed now is action to match the mood to build Our Fair Future.
